Many of us do not realise the importance of securing our home and ensuring the protection of our loved ones.
My husband and I learned this when our house was burgled more than a week ago. All this while we took many things for granted.
We now realise the importance of placing an alarm system at home to protect ourselves in case of an emergency. The best ones available in the market now are the wireless alarm systems that can be activated through a remote as well as the mobile phone via GSM technology.
We also realised the importance of not keeping any valuables at home. Many of us only insure our home but we tend to forget to insure our belongings. It would be best to consider this option so that losses are limited in case of an unfortunate incident.
The last thing I want to share is about dealing with kids during a horrifying experience. My three-year-old son relates the burglary to everyone he sees but my five-year-old child was a bit shaken by this experience. It is important to sit and talk things through with children when something unfortunate happens, such as a robbery or death.
Children need to understand what has happened and what mummy and daddy will do to protect them so that they feel reassured that the same thing will not happen again. My eldest son who is always very cheerful has become very withdrawn after the incident. But now, he is also checking out the booklets and telling his father about the type of alarm system which is required at home.
Some of us learn it the hard way and then say things like “If only we had done this much sooner”.
Please take the necessary action to ensure that your home is safe. Teach your child what to do in an emergency and also teach your child your handphone number so that he/she can ask anyone's assistance to get in touch with you if there is a need.
CHILDREN ARE OUR PRIZED POSSESSIONS. Don't wait until it is too late.
